Brownie #3 Labrador Retriever Adult Male for sale in Annapolis, Maryland

Brownie #3's story
BROWNIE is a 6-year-old neutered male yellow lab. Brownie weighs 58 pounds and is up to date on shots. This dog is approved for homes with children ages 10 and up.
DESCRIPTION Three years ago, three dogs showed up at the home of a senior couple. They notified Animal Control but were never claimed. The dogs were sweet and no bother, so the couple fed them. Weeks afterwards, the couple found a newborn litter of six puppies under the house; a week later, the other female popped out a half dozen pups. The couple built a large chain link run to protect the dogs from the busy highway out front. They got the pups to the vet for shots and had the three adults sterilized. They were able to find homes for half the pups, which was a miracle in itself since they lived in one of the poorest counties in the state. The lady was increasingly overwhelmed as her husband's cancer progressed and the cost of his medications precluded providing regular vet care, although they were able to afford getting all the pups sterilized. After her husband passed away, she was at a loss to give the nine dogs the personal attention she knew they deserved. Money was tight but she wanted to keep the dogs her husband had loved so much. When Hurricane Florence flooded out the dog run, with water rushing over the sandbags piled along the sides, she brought the nine onto the screened porch for shelter, as they had never been indoors before. She knew she needed help and a volunteer rescuer contacted Lab Rescue.
Fast forward 10 weeks. Maybell, Brownie, and Angie, now six years old, are waiting for homes of their own. They have been in foster care since they came to Virginia and are some of the easiest fosters we have ever had- although getting them to eat the first few weeks was a challenge. They have not had a single accident, don't destroy anything (except Angie's penchant for eviscerating stuffies), and are mostly quiet, other than when other dogs parade past the glass doors, but a reminder of "behave" or "time out" immediately quiets them. None of them have a mean bone in their bodies, and although it's obvious that they have been afraid of some things, they have never responded with aggression. They take treats so gently. When the weather is nice, we just leave their door open so they can explore in the yard and they just go back inside once they are finished. Brownie, who may be Angie's brother, father or son, or even the father of the pups of one litter or both, is normally pretty confident, unless you are asking him to do something too new too quickly, like putting on a Reptar costume. He sometimes needs a little extra coaxing to come inside, or even to come over to you, but patience pays off. Brownie will need to go to a home with another confident dog so he can continue to blossom. Brownie normally greets you wiggling his entire body, almost turning inside out while he walks toward you. He more readily visits and relaxes with women than with men, but he doesn't run from men or cower.
Adopters must meet these requirements:
Setting: Rural, Suburban
Dwelling: Single Family Home, townhome
Fencing: Prefer fence since he hasn't been exposed to much that we take for granted.
Brownie is from a rural area and has not been exposed to traffic, noise, or groups of people. If dogs are overwhelmed by their environment, they can exhibit behaviors like excessive barking. For now, to avoid this, we are limiting placement to standalone, single family homes in a suburban neighborhood or rural area. After Brownie has been in a foster home for at least a week or two, we will evaluate if placement can be expanded to include a more urban environment and will send out an update.
